In industrial production, food processing, pharmaceutical sterilization, building material curing and other steam-consuming scenarios, the selection of steam generators directly determines enterprises’ energy costs, production efficiency and compliance operations. Many enterprises always wonder during equipment procurement: which one is more energy-saving, cost-effective and suitable for production conditions, resistance steam generator or gas steam generator?
There is a common misconception in the market that high thermal efficiency equals lower operating costs. In fact, the two types of equipment adopt completely different working principles, with huge differences in energy loss modes, applicable scenarios and operating costs. Today, we will deeply analyze the real advantages and disadvantages of the two devices from four dimensions: working principle, thermal efficiency, actual energy consumption and working condition adaptation, helping enterprises avoid pitfalls and cut costs efficiently.
The equipment adopts the core technology of immersed resistance heating. High-quality stainless steel heating tubes are fully submerged in water. Based on the physical principle of heat generation by resistance energization, electric energy is directly converted into heat energy. The water is rapidly heated through heat conduction to quickly boil and produce saturated steam. The whole process requires no combustion or open flame, and consumes no fuel. The complete steam generation system realizes automatic intelligent water replenishment, temperature control and pressure stabilization. It heats up instantly once powered on and generates steam immediately, eliminating preheating and standby heat preservation. The energy conversion chain is extremely simple with almost no extra energy loss.
The equipment takes natural gas as the main fuel. A high-precision burner ignites automatically, and natural gas burns sufficiently to produce high-temperature flame and flue gas. Through dual modes of thermal radiation and convective heat transfer, the flame continuously scours the heat exchange wall of the furnace to heat the water inside and generate steam. Continuous combustion is required during operation. The generated flue gas needs to be discharged through a flue. Besides, the equipment must be preheated before startup. After shutdown, the residual heat of the furnace dissipates naturally. Standby operation and frequent startup & shutdown will cause fixed fuel consumption.
Benefiting from the direct electric heating mode with a simple structure, the thermal efficiency of resistance steam generators reaches 95%-98%. There are no intermediate links in energy conversion, no flue gas heat loss or incomplete combustion loss. It is especially suitable for intermittent startup & shutdown and short-time steam use scenarios, eliminating empty combustion and standby waste, and achieving excellent standalone energy efficiency.
Restricted by the principle of combustion heat exchange, gas steam generators inevitably suffer from flue gas waste heat loss and combustion loss. The thermal efficiency of standard models is only 92%-94%. Even high-end energy-saving condensing models cannot completely eliminate heat loss. Meanwhile, due to the inherent preheating and heat dissipation characteristics, energy waste will be more obvious in low-frequency and intermittent steam supply scenarios.
The core reason for poor equipment selection by many enterprises is confusing equipment thermal efficiency and comprehensive operating cost.
Although resistance-type equipment has higher energy efficiency, electric power is secondary energy, which goes through multiple conversion processes including power generation and power transmission, resulting in high unit energy prices. Therefore, it is more suitable for factories with intermittent production, frequent startup and shutdown, no gas pipeline access and strict environmental protection requirements. If used with off-peak electricity at night, the power consumption cost can be greatly reduced, and the energy-saving cost performance will be significantly improved.
Although the thermal efficiency of gas-type equipment is slightly lower, natural gas is primary energy. It directly burns for heat supply with a short energy chain and low unit price. Under working conditions of 24-hour continuous full-load operation and large & stable steam output, the low fuel cost can perfectly make up for the disadvantage of low thermal efficiency, showing prominent advantages in cost saving for long-term operation.
Discontinuous steam demand and frequent startup/shutdown; no gas supporting facilities in the plant and no access to natural gas; strict environmental protection supervision and open-flame prohibition; access to off-peak electricity to reduce costs. Suitable for small and medium-sized intermittent steam-consuming scenarios. In addition, the equipment requires no flue, simple EIA procedures and low maintenance pressure, with extremely low hidden costs.
24-hour non-stop factory production, large and stable steam demand; convenient access to natural gas in the plant; pursue cost reduction for long-scale production. Ideal for all-day steam-consuming scenarios such as large-scale food processing, chemical reaction, central heating and precast component curing.
Overall: Resistance type achieves higher standalone thermal efficiency; Gas type saves more money for long-term continuous operation. Enterprises should not select equipment blindly. Only by combining their own production conditions, steam usage habits and local energy prices can they select the most suitable steam equipment to reduce consumption and improve efficiency.
